2021-September Event Servant Leadership and the Most Infamous Construction Project Ever!
Based on discussions in major league baseball regarding the potential departure of the Tampa Bay Rays for Montreal, Tina was inspired to study the construction project of the Montreal Olympic Stadium. The "Big-O" was built for the 1976 summer Olympics, and home to the Montreal Expos baseball club between 1977 and 2004. To this day, it remains the second most expensive stadium ever built in world history.
With cost overruns of nearly 400%, and a $1.47 billion debt paid off after 3 decades, the Big-O has had no main tenant since the Expos left Montreal. It continues to run a deficit in spite of initial project forecasts of being cost free to tax payers, and there are new efforts to redefine its perceived value in the community.
