Military Project Management Get Started
How to get there from here
1. Research the profession! If becoming a Project Management Professional seems like an option, you are in the right place. Sign up for a PMI chapter dinner meeting to network with Project Management Professionals in the area. (you do not have to be a member to attend a dinner meeting)
Prerequisites:
(2 options)
Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent) •7,500 hours leading and directing projects •35 hours of project management education |
Four-year degree •4,500 hours leading and directing projects •35 hours of project management education |
2. This excel spreadsheet can assist you in recording/documenting experience hours in Project Management.
The PMI Lexicon identifies terms used in project management. (each branch of service has its own terminology)
Think of a deployment/mission as a “project” Each requires planning, logistics. The deployment or mission itself may be the execution of the project. Post deployment may have Project close elements (lessons learned, equipment repositioning and storage)
Other possible military projects: Search & rescue missions, command assessments, repair projects. (ships, equipment)
3. Required education contact hours can be completed through colleges or eLearning,
- you must be able to provide completion certificates or transcript.
Military and some veterans can use education benefits to complete this requirement. Some organizations have free access to skillport courses.
4. Once you have enough documented education and experience, prepare for the examination. There are many sources to assist in studying, (boot camps, study groups, software) some of these resources may be covered by your education benefits or reimbursable through your military education sources (including Veterans benefits)
5. If you are ready for the exam go for it. In most cases, the cost of the examination is reimbursable. Check out the military links for your branch to see your benefits.
