2018 PMI NEFL Professional Development Day – Sept. 28th (7 PDU's)

Root Cause Analysis for Project Management: Closing the Loop on Risk Management (7 PDU's)

Presented by Duke Okes, ASQ

Workshop Description:

Regardless of how well the project manager and team develop requirements, processes to meet them, and systems for measuring performance, things will go wrong.  Some simply require correction, while others call for a deeper analysis into the underlying process weaknesses that caused and/or allowed the problem to occur.

PMI-QualityHowever, there is a wide range of situations to which RCA can be applied, such as single events/failures, patterns of failures, failure of the project itself, and cross-project issues.  Within these the RCA could look at safety issues, production issues, process issues, and system issues.  Each of these creates not only a different problem definition but also calls for different approaches to data collection and analysis.

This workshop will clarify the differences in approach for each of these situations, as well as issues such as:

  • When does it/not make sense to conduct a RCA?
  • How to avoid jumping to conclusions
  • The difference between physical causes and root causes
  • How deep to go, and/or when to stop
  • How RCA closes the loop on risk management at multiple levels

Participants will also have the opportunity to apply some of the learning to their own project experiences.
